However, only a few weeks after the pro-union vote, an organization of company pilots was petitioning the National Labor Mediation Board to call a second vote to oust the union, leading analysts to doubt ALPA's continued influence over FedEx budgetary policy. On the plus side, the expiration of a federal cargo tax during the federal budget impasse of January would provide FedEx with a fiscal boost as the company maintained prices despite a temporary hiatus in federally directed excise payments. In the early s FedEx's foreign operations were troubled, and their losses dragged down company earnings. After a while, this new team is so successful that Florenz Ziegfeld is interested in them, but due to the fact that Nadine Hale also dances and stars in the Ziegfeld Follies, Don says no. Despite the fact that he is in love with Hannah, he keeps the relation with her strictly business. So Hannah is of the opinion that he is still in love with Nadine, and her suspicion grows when he dances with Nadine in a Night Club Floor Show.Add content advisory. Did you know Edit. Trivia Gene Kelly was originally scheduled to play Don, but he broke his ankle when he stamped his foot in anger after losing a volleyball game. It was his suggestion that he be replaced by Fred Astaire. Cyd Charisse was up for the role of Nadine, but a torn ligament in either one or both of her knees forced her to drop out.She was replaced by Ann Miller. Although she had been a star for years, Judy Garland had never met Astaire and was afraid to speak to him until they were properly introduced. In the wings at the end of it, she removes her headdress, discards her huge fan, and goes back onstage to call Don Hewes out of the crowd to dance their old number. Suddenly, she's wearing ballet slippers. In fact, in all of her scenes with Don, she wears flat shoes, so as not to tower over him. Quotes Don Hewes : Why didn't you tell me I was in love with you? Alternate versions Judy Garland sings "Mr. Monotony" in a sequence cut from the film. An excerpt from the number was included in That's Entertainment! III User reviews 92 Review. Top review. She was in good form — we had a very good time. Our numbers together remain as high spots of enjoyment in my career. Her uncanny knowledge of showmanship impressed me more than ever as I worked with her. Easter Parade may have had a troubled production, but the delays that originally ensued were not evident during filming.Once the shooting process commenced everything ran smoothly. Judy Garland appeared to be in better health, and all cast members built a great rapport with each other. This made it incredibly beneficial to the film, and with the continuous pattern of advantages, Easter Parade was completed in three months. The result of Fred Astaire vacating his retirement to collide with Judy Garland in Easter Parade proved to be among the best decisions he made in his life. The film was an immediate hit, and was touted as the greatest musical of the year.Fred Astaire and Judy Garland are not the only masterminds behind the films triumph. Directer Charles Walters contributed a lot to the project.Joining Charles Walters in acclamation were Sidney Sheldon, Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett who provided a screenplay that was rich in flavor and lively in character development. Don is incensed with anger over Nadine disrupting his plans, but he is convinced that he can find another girl and transform her into a competent dancer. Easter Parade was first conceived in late , when Irving Berlin conjured up the idea of making a movie around his song Easter Parade. Around the same time, Berlin discussed his plans with Twentieth Century Fox, who reportedly refused to deal with his requests. This spawned a series of altercations until Arthur Freed stepped in and offered his services. Instead, Peter Lawford and Cyd Charisse were chosen as the films sidekicks. That was the initial plan, but Easter Parade was plagued with adversities from the onset. The first unfortunate predicament came when Gelly Kelly broke his ankle, but when Cyd Charisse withdrew from the project after tearing a ligament in her knee, the production company were really under strain. The investigation was over when Ann Miller was rescued from B movies to fulfill the role that would ultimately pave the way for her future success in motion pictures. Around the same time, Arthur Freed removed Vincente Minnelli from the directors chair. Despite these obstacles that could have sabotaged the project, Easter Parade managed to hit all the high notes on its release. The film is composed of masterful musical scores by Irving Berlin whose showcase of songs are festive, joyous and extremely stimulating.A large majority of the music present in the film are a trademark of the singing careers of both Fred Astaire and Judy Garland and are considered to be among their most recognizable songs. The song was performed by both Garland and Astaire and written by Irving Berlin, who was forced to undergo drastic changes to help further the films success. As much as I adore Judy Garland and her remarkable on-screen chemistry with Fred Astaire, I think my favorite scene from the movie though, is where Astaire visits the toy shop and performs his famous tap dance number Drum Crazy. What I also like about this scene is how certain aspects are tangible. In real life, Astaire was a voracious drummer, a passion that he proudly essays during this routine. In his autobiography, Steps In Time, Astaire stated that the studio decided to wait in the hopes that she might make a rapid recovery. However, the chances of Judy returning to work were impossible. Gene Kelly was originally supposed to play the lead. However, he injured his ankle when he stomped his foot after losing a volleyball game the weekend before production was scheduled to start.Sidney Sheldon was brought in to bring out the comedy. An injury also kept Cyd Charisse from taking the role that eventually went to Ann Miller. Unfortunately, Miller was also injured at the time and performed in a back brace. She also made sure to wear ballet slippers, so not to be taller than Fred Astaire a worry that is also used in The Band Wagon. The first scene that Judy Garland had to shoot with Fred Astaire included a kiss. This was MGM's highest grossing film of It was inspired by the annual event in New York City where people stroll down Fifth Avenue, displaying their new hats some very outrageous and their Easter finery. The song also appeared in the Irving Berlin movie Holiday Inn Jules Munshin 's film debut. He plays the comic waiter who gives very entertaining descriptions of the menu items. In the title song, the term "rotogravure" does not refer to the photographic process. In the days that this movie took place, newspapers would have a special insert - on holidays and Sundays - of photographs of local people and events. This special insert was called the Rotogravure.Every time Jonny picks up the phone to call Nadine, he gives a different phone number to the operator. Jules Munshin 's seemingly superfluous routine as the waiter, who pantomimes the elongated making of a gourmet salad, had a purpose beyond this film. It was one of several instances wherein MGM enacted a screen test through a feature film in order to determine public response to the performer, and how he or she registered on film.In most cases, these screen tests-cum-screen debuts were ill-fated, but both O'Brien and Munshin scored studio contracts based on enthusiastic audience response to their brief snippets of screen time. This picture, which began its run nationally on July 8, , was the second-biggest moneymaking film of the year, directly after the Bing Crosby - Bob Hope - Dorothy Lamour Road to Rio , which was launched nationally on Christmas Day of The critical and financial success of the Judy Garland - Fred Astaire pairing chiefly "made up" for the mixed reviews and poor box office except in a few large cities of Judy Garland 's prior musical, The Pirate , which had opened nationally on June 11, only a month before her frolic with Astaire was seen by moviegoers.Ann Miller danced with pinched nerves in her back. She was also taller than Fred Astaire , so she offered to wear ballet slippers instead of heels when she danced with him. This can be seen towards the end of the movie. When she finishes the number "The Girl I Love" she goes behind the curtain wearing red high heels; when she comes back out in front of the audience to entice Astaire to dance with her to their old song "It Only Happens When I Dance With You", she's wearing red flats.Ann Miller 's first film for MGM under a new contract.
