American Hustle: Review. After the short-lived creation of a dictatorship of the proletariat and the collapse of capitalism, class conflict will come to an end. Democratic socialists however endorse the parliamentary route towards a socialist system. By gaining an electoral mandate from the people, a socialist government could utilise a system based upon parliamentary sovereignty to implement a programme of nationalisation, centralisation, protectionism and co-operatives run by the workers.Such measures can be achieved on an evolutionary basis. In doing so, there is no need for the bloody revolution prescribed by Marxists. The democratic process therefore offers the most preferable route towards a socialist economic system. In contrast to their more left-wing brethren, social democrats endorse a far less radical approach. Those on the centre-left of the political spectrum advocate gradual and piecemeal tactics towards lasting social change. Social democracy is at heart a moderate form of socialism that seeks to persuade people as to the merits of incremental steps. For instance, social democrats argue that paying workers a decent wage helps to raise productivity and reduce the number of hours lost due to staff absences. This is because of the huge numbers of the proletariat which will overpower the bourgeoisie grip on power as the ruling class cannot prevent an upheaval this is, of course, implying a fair and equal democratic system. An example of this is in the where european countries such as France and Italys communist parties advocated Eurocommunism -moved away from typical communist values typified in the socialist Soviet Union and shifted towards many features of a liberal democracy. The second similarity between the two forms of socialism is that they both agree that there is the need for a raise in consciousness amongst the people regarding socialist principles.Revolutionary and evolutionary socialists that in order for a socialist state to be realised there must be the maintenance of socialist beliefs. The core principles of equality, cooperation, fraternity must be upheld. However, in evaluation one could argue that they still do differ in the channels in which this social consciousness is brought about. Revolutionary socialists would argue that in order to spark up a revolution- revolutionary content must be maintained in order to get the masses of the proletariat into a coherent body in order to overthrow the capitalist state. On the other hand, evolutionary socialists focus upon gradual change in the education system in order to indoctrinate socialism into citizens. To Conclude, whilst superficially the two methods seem to share this belief, one could argue that in depth they are quite different. In Conclusion, revolutionary and evolutionary socialism- whilst superficially they seem to share core ideas if one investigates further it is clear to see they are two different paths which end up in the same direction but differ in every other aspect. However, their differences are clear-cut- they disagree on the way of achieving a socialist state and they both disagree upon the nature of the state.Politics and Popular Culture in Historical Materialism. Marxism and the Dialectical Met - Maurice Cornforth. Marxism and Globalization in International Relations. Ben Ashraf: Discuss the extent of similarities between evolutionary and revolutionary forms of socialism Revolutionary and Evolutionary socialism are two conflicting attempts to achieve a utopian socialist society.Siobhan Kennedy. For example: a. The Bourgeoisie was the economically dominant class but was also a politically dominant Ruling Class because all of the political leaders were drawn from the Bourgeoisie and could be relied upon to represent the interests of their own class. Meanwhile as already mentioned the Proletariat were unrepresented politically. The legal system protected private property and heavy penalties were imposed for minor thefts, with no account taken of mitigating circumstances. The legal system also discriminated against trade unions. The Ruling Class attempted to maintain its power by spreading a so-called Ruling Class Ideology via the Family, the Church, the Schools and the Media, designed to encourage the working class to accept their own exploitation and the dominance of the Ruling Class without question. Therefore, education was mainly for the rich and any education given to the poor was designed to keep them firmly in their place. According to Marx, religion played a similar role. Although capitalism would improve living standards for some, it would also lead to increasing unemployment, poverty and misery for many. Industrialisation would lead to urbanisation and this would make it easier to organise trade unions and political parties to represent the interests of the working class. As a result, the Proletariat would eventually become aware of the reasons for its exploitation. It would develop a consciousness of its class position. That is, in Marx's own terms, it would change from a class in itself to a class for itself. It would protest, demonstrate and finally rise up and overthrow the Bourgeoisie. Capitalism would eventually be replaced by Communism which was to be a classless utopia.Revolutionary socialists therefore seek the abolition of capitalism by revolutionary means. This implies that private property will be abolished and since in the Marxist scheme social class membership derives form the ownership of private property, the abolition of private property is said to mean also that social classes will also be abolished and a classless society will be gradually introduced. The economy will be controlled and planned by central government in an attempt to secure greater economic efficiency. It will, however, be necessary for a transitional period to allow some economic inequality as a means of providing financial incentives but eventually production will be organised to meet the most important needs of the people and incomes will be distributed according to the needs of the people. In practice revolutions have not occurred in advanced western capitalist economies as Marx had predicted and where they have occurred as for example in Russia they have not occurred according to the theoretical scheme proposed by Marx thereby undermining the Marxist claim to have developed a scientific theory of socialism. However in the case of the Russian revolution important modifications to the Marxist theory were suggested by Lenin who argued that in the case of Russia it would be necessary to create a small vanguard party of revolutionaries to advance the revolution rather than to wait for the further development of capitalism to create the conditions for revolution as suggested in orthodox Marxist theory.
